11th Malaysian Piano Jazz Festival

The Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival (MJPF) is celebrating its 11th Festival on the 21st to the 23rd of June at klpac.  It began when a few of Malaysia’s top Jazz pianists decided to organise a Jazz festival which paid particular focus and attention to the role of Jazz Pianists and also to the needs of young jazz piano students in 2013. It remains unique in the world of Jazz Festivals and since then the MJPF has gone on to become the longest consistently running Jazz Festival in Kuala Lumpur.

The MJPF focusses on two key aspects namely Education and Performances. The mornings and afternoons of the festival are dedicated to workshops, clinics and theory classes for young jazz students and musicians. They are conducted by the industry’s top professionals and the topics are carefully decided each year by MJPF’s committee.  All workshops and clinics are free of charge and the instructors themselves gladly share their knowledge without payment or expectation of payment. This has been the spirit of MJPF where musicians come together to help each other to progress and, in that way, build a true music community.

The night concerts provide a showcase and a platform for young musicians to display their skills and they also allow for professional musicians to perform with each other and to encourage younger musicians to continue to raise the standard of jazz in Malaysia. As with the clinics and workshops, all participating musicians perform for free, solely for the sake of building this community and helping each other to succeed in what has to be one of the most difficult careers to make a living in.

OUR GOALS

  • Impart knowledge to music students.
  • To connect music students with the leading professionals.

  • To build a skills-based community that is constantly seeking to improve and to better the quality of Malaysian music using the high demands of Jazz as a sharpening stone for any commercial genre of music.

The coming together of professional musicians and young musicians contributing their skills, time, effort with no payment has been the reason why the MJPF has thrived and grown with many hundreds of musicians having participated over all these years.  This is something unique to the MJPF and we know of nowhere else where this has happened, where the main sponsors of the festival are the participants themselves!  We are truly proud of our growing music community and the ‘can-do’ spirit that has been instrumental in the growth of live music within the Klang Valley and beyond.

Highlights of MJPF

  • College Night where music students in various music colleges perform on the same stage. Here they get to know each other and to spur each other on to better and better performances every year.
  • Microclinics. In this way, the MJPF has come to be a festival that is more than just about the piano but rather a festival for all musical instruments.

  • The Malaysian Real Book, a landmark project undertaken during the MCO days which features over 240 Malaysian compositions from classics to the contemporary. This is the only such book of its kind in the history of Malaysian Music.

  • Forums where leading industry professionals come to discuss issues of importance to musicians and also to share their experience with young musicians and students.
  • Penang Jazz Camp 2024. This is a undertaking of MJPF together with Universiti Sains Malaysia and the Penang Jazz Society to stimulate the growth of live music in Penang with the aim of restoring Penang to it’s glorious days as the center of jazz in Malaysia.
